Hospital clowning isn’t about gags and balloon animals. Mostly its improv – creating stories on the spot, free-flowing imagination, and adapting to another person’s cues.
Hearts & Noses shared that skill with students from the Richi Innovation Camp. The prestigious 3-week program, which draws high school students from all over the world, gives campers a solid grounding in the science of inspiration and creativity.
Executive director Cheryl Lekousi spent an afternoon with the students — many of whom are contemplating careers in medicine — to share the hospital clown experience and lead them through some improvisational play.
“These students tend to be very cerebral,” Lekousi says. “The camp experience helps them see the value of play, imagination, and laughter.”
As part of the Richi Innovation Camp, Hearts & Noses was included in a leading line-up of presenters, including professors from MIT and business leaders from throughout Boston’s innovative ecosystem.
Fresh thinking
The Richi Foundation raises money for pediatric cancer research. While the camps are themselves a fund raiser, they may also help to develop future doctors and scientists who will offer a disruptive, fresh approach to pediatric cancer care.
